Cultural heritage & Climate Change – Climatefit.city meet in Rome, Italy

On Thursday 10th of  January 2019, the Climate-fit.city held a meeting in the City of Rome for a cultural heritage demonstration workshop at the National Roman Museum 🏛.

20 stakeholders (Climate data users, cultural managers, archeologists, and outdoor museum managers) discussed the city resilience to climate change through the use of improved climate data.

Today, climate change is already impacting the conservation and exploitation of historical sites. While extreme rain events damage the fragile materials, excessive heat stress during heat waves in combination with air pollution and allergenic pollen leads to unbearable conditions for tourists. In particular, elderly, asthmatic and sick persons are very sensitive to the health impacts.

Future climate predictions forecast that these negative impacts will become worse in the near and far future. Extreme weather events will occur more often and with increased intensity. To protect the cultural heritage sites for future generations as well as to safeguard their touristic exploitation demands a long-term vision. This vision needs to include future climatic conditions.

"The Climate-fit.city cultural heritage urban climate service will improve the management of our touristic activities inside Rome on the long term by taking climate change impacts into account". Andrea Perotta, SSBAR
